Jump Ball - The procedure used to put the ball in play at the beginning of a game or after a held ball. Two opponents face each other from either side of the free-throw line or the midcourt line. The referee tosses the ball up between the two opposing players, and they each jump up and attempt to tip the ball to their respective teammates. An action of tossing the ball vertically by the referee between two opposing players to a height greater than either of them would reach in the jump. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
